
Biography


Maya Ebrahimi Zanjani, born in Mashad, Iran in 1975, comes from a family of musical artists. Under the guidance of her grandfather and father she became acquainted with music from when she was just a child. According to her parents, Maya began singing popular Iranian songs at the age of two. When she was nine, her grandfather taught her to recite the Quran. Maya’s grandfather was a professional traditional Iranian singer and musician (played the “Tar”, “Setar” and “Ney”).Her first formal singing teacher was her father, who is a well experienced in traditional Iranian music. She continued her singing training with Mr Shakery, who is a very well-known teacher in Iranian Dastgah and Radif, in Khorasan province. After completing Solfege courses in Jahad Daneshgahi, she was offered a place to sing Alto in their Choral group. A few years later, she has had the opportunity to take singing lessons from Shajarian. Over the years, Maya has performed in India, radio Melbourne and Adelaide. She currently is not only working on Iranian song, but also westernised music. In addition, she is working on fusion (East-West music) these days. At present, she lives in Australia, taking part in Iranian community music events and teaching Traditional Iranian singing as well. Some of the new pieces have been composed by her brother and her. The lyrics of these pieces are based on poems by her husband (Dr Ali Mansoori). These songs are soon to be released.
